I can't reproduce the bug (Windows 7, 64 bit).
In my own compiled version and also in the 2011.4 release I don't get crashes when optimizing. Also when changing image variables manually I don't get a crash when afterward optimizing. 
Maybe there is someone with your configuration or a bug/error in your system (I remember your other bug concerning the optimizer https://bugs.launchpad.net/hugin/+bug/978608). But I have no idea what could be the cause.

  Hugin crashes when lens parameters are changed

Status in Hugin - Panorama Tools GUI:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Example: Load 1 image, set 1 horizintal line and optimize. Then change
  a lens parameter (I changed the horizontal share g) and optimize
  again. Hugin crashes!

  Same occurs with some other parameter changes.

  Workaround: Save the project instantly after change of settings, close
  hugin, and restart with the saved project. You must close Hugin, it is
  not sufficient to close only the project and relaod ist.

  This was found in Hugin 2011.4.0.cf9be9344356 built by Matthew Petroff
  in Windows 7 64 bit.
