Are you using the 32 or 64 bit version?
Try the 64 bit version.
If this does not help so bug #717944 for a workaround.

  error when creating control points 2012.0 and windows 7 64bit

Status in Hugin - Panorama Tools GUI:
  New

Bug description:
  When creating control points with 2012.0 on windows 7 64 bits, two
  errors are generated:

  Directory Canon with 10240 entries considered invalid; not read.

  An error happened while loading image : caught exception: bad
  allocation 

  Control point creation ends with zero points created. When stitching 3
  pictures or less still generates the first error, but not second.
  Control points are then generated properly.

  I don't have all the specs of the machine right now, but I know this
  is on a laptop with 8Gb of ram and a fast enough processor.
