I experienced similar crashes (reported using Apport) on Ubuntu 12.04, both with Hugin versions 2011.4.0 and 2012.0.0
Apparently this was due some X display component not being available (I presume because some video player did not exit cleanly).
Also any video playback, e.g., using MPlayer, was refused. After logging out and logging in again, the issue was gone.

  segmentation fault after image alignment

Status in Hugin - Panorama Tools GUI:
  New

Bug description:
  loaded a some pictures, then clicked on "Align" button, the new window
  with the console opens up, execute his own calculations with (as i
  assume) success and close itself. The new panorama window opens itself
  showing no images. In few seconds the whole application crashes
  leaving a segmentation fault.
