I'll postpone the patch #5 indefinitely and
put this issue into state "won't fix".  The less
we molest Automake the better.

@Bruno: Please reopen and apply a fix à ton goût if
you have a brilliant idea.

  I'm trying to make a tarball from the default branch so I can update
  the fedora package but `make dist` fails:
