Fixed by replacing the main menu with a dummy menubar with no  menus.
Might be better to disable all menus in the real menubar?

Bug description:
  Not sure about other platforms, but on MacOS the load and save dialogs
  seem to not be modal, meaning you can access the main window's menu
  bar while the load/save dialog is up. One problem is that you can
  therefore keep opening more and more load/save dialogs on top of each
  other...
