  open recent menu not populated for users with permission problems

Status in HypeDyn:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  The "open recent" menu is not populated  - this happened for those
  users who had permission problems with saving. Could either be that
  the prefs file wasn't saved, or if saving is failing, then the failed
  save doesn't populate the list (which is fine).
