Gentle I assure you :-).  I like the first-run idea.

Another way could be to have an "updateinx' script (say) that pulls
down and deploys the changes.  It's going to get trickier and trickier
to deploy though as there are more releases.

The ultimate way?  INX as a Debian package.  The changes to things
like permissions on /dev/fb0 can be done using maintainer scripts -
including popup warnings about what's being done.

Yes, hence the existence of FreeNX.  I doubt there's a version of that
that uses directfb though.
