Of course php53u-mysqlnd package would be alternative to php53u-mysql and they should conflict each other.
Yet another reason for providing mysqlnd driver is mysqlnd plugins like these: <http://php.net/mysqlnd_ms> and <http://php.net/mysqlnd_qc>.

  REASON: The native MySQL driver for PHP should provide a slightly better performance compared to the shared MySQL client library. No additional source code is needed to the repository as mysqlnd is bundled to PHP 5.3 source. <http://php.net/mysqlnd>
