  fix bug in fitting procedures: if canvas is set to 'no statistics'
  mode and if no statistics box is displayed in canvas, trying to
  fit with any of the GUI fit buttons leads to segmentation violation.
  reason: if user has set canvas to 'no statistics' mode, trying to force
  generation of statistics box with TH1 option does not work, so we
  have to double check whether the statistics box is there or not.
