Peter Wigg confirmed that the question is solved:
KVList works perfectly :) and if as you say the pointers remain valid
until the database closes then I don't forsee any problems with using
that solution.

First time I've really used exceptions properly, besides toying with
them now and again. They do turn out to be rather useful in some cases
:) I made sure to document it well as I'll forget where I catch them :P
