Hi Ike,
Thanks for responding. The problem apparently had resolved itself (or
rather was likely resolved due to efforts on the Ubuntu development team)
in that now, the bootup GUI is gone and I see text streaming by on boot up
and the boot is now sucessful every time. I'm guessing that the boot
graphics were the problem or related to it and the team chose to just
remove these bootup graphics. Apparently, that solved the problem - thanks
to them.

I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my Retina Macbook Pro 10,2 13"
display and I find that the booting is unreliable, namely that the
machine boots into a black screen with a cursor about 70% of the boot
