update is available for your BIOS (1.41). If you update to this, does it
change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

  System: Lenovo W520
  2 SSDs: INTEL SSDSC2CW240A3 and OCZ-VERTEX2

  Installed 12.10 (64bit) but cannot boot it due to IO Errors:

  (Sorry, I have to type this from a video I've taken so no guarantee

  This happens for both disks if I try to install 12.10 on it.

  11.04 works (in this regard) flawlessly on both disks.
