I updated the bios to 1.52 and (unfortunately) also my kernel some time ago and have not encountered the bug since.
So it's fixed, but I'm not clear what exactly fixed it.

  iwlwifi stops working

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Sometimes (multiple times a day), the wifi stops working. Network
  manager still shows connection, but no data is going in or out.
  Ping/DNS resolve fails. The last entries in dmesg are then:

  Reconnecting with networkmanager does not help. rmmod and modprobe of
  iwlwifi restores wifi (until it breaks again). This did not happen on
  oneiric.
