[Bug 1211343] Re: Firefox and Virtual Box crash and freeze the system

** Description changed:

- Please subscribe Christopher M. Penalver to this report.
+ Previously I was using Lubuntu 12.10, with kernel 3.5.0-37-generic, and
+ I experienced no problems with either Firefox or Oracle's Virtual Box.
+ Upon updating to Lubuntu 13.04 (and of course updating both packages),
+ Firefox would not launch most of the time and Virtual Box would never
+ launch. When either package crashed, the whole system would freeze, and
+ a regular pattern of colored, diagonallly oriented bars would appear on
+ the screen. These crashes always required a cold start (turning off and
+ on) to regain control of the system. In the case of Firefox, I noticed
+ that if I used the previous kernel (3.5.0-37-generic), the package
+ would launch normally in Lubuntu 13.04. I did not test this with
+ VirtualBox.

- This bug seems to be the same as Bug #1176062. Previously I was using
- Lubuntu 12.10, with kernel 3.5.0-37-generic, and I experienced no
- problems with either Firefox or Oracle's Virtual Box. Upon updating to
- Lubuntu 13.04 (and of course updating both packages), Firefox would not
- launch most of the time and Virtual Box would never launch. When either
- package crashed, the whole system would freeze, and a regular pattern of
- colored, diagonallly oriented bars would appear on the screen. These
- crashes always required a cold start (turning off and on) to regain
- control of the system.
-
- In the case of Firefox, I noticed that if I used the previous kernel
- (3.5.0-37-generic), the package would launch normally in Lubuntu 13.04.
- I did not test this with VirtualBox.
-
- My computer has an onboard graphics chip: NVIDIA Corporation C61
- [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430]. Up to then, I had been using nouveau as the
- graphics driver. I then decided to replace nouveau with the nvidia
- drivers provided by Synaptic. This seems to have solved the problem, and
- now I can launch both Firefox and Virtual Box without any crashes with
- kernel 3.8.0-27-generic.
-
- I hope this helps. Thank you for your attention.
+ WORKAROUND: I replaced nouveau with the nvidia drivers provided by
+ Synaptic and this seems to have solved the problem, and now I can launch
+ both Firefox and Virtual Box without any crashes with kernel
+ 3.8.0-27-generic.
