USB drive with VFAT not mountable in saucy

Bug description:
I have two USB disk devices that don't work anymore when I updated to
  Saucy.

The second is an Android phone, which prints this to dmesg:

  [27177.509078] scsi9 : usb-storage 1-1.4.5.2:1.0

[27181.559355] FAT-fs (sdd1): unable to read boot sector to mark fs as dirty

  Both devices:

  - work on other machines
  - fail when plugged to a hub or directly in the computer

A USB disk with ext4 works flawlessly.
