Christopher,

I only reported that I couldn't use a live CD. All the other things about
kernels, etc, well... I don't understand any of that stuff.

I have since installed Ubuntu 12.04, and I'm very happy with that
version.

  I used this same CD earlier on the same computer and didn't have any problems.

  Now the installation seems OK, but refuses to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10.
