Title:
Kernel 3.5.0-34 update breaks Thinkpad X30 - freeze on X startup
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
* Thinkpad X30, 1G RAM
* Ubuntu desktop i386 installed from 12.04.2 CD
* Initial install with 3.5.0-23 kernel is fine
* After full upgrade, machine fails to boot, locks up at the time X starts (see below)
* Rebooting with 3.5.0-23 kernel is fine
* A binary chop shows that 3.5.0-32 kernel is fine (which is what I'm submitting this with), but 3.5.0-34 kernel is still broken
Symptom: when graphics is starting, the machine freezes. The display
shows a bizarre gradual increase in brightness to green, fading to
purple, and back out again. It looks something like a nebula. Pretty,
but useless. The only way to get out is to hold down the power button
for 4 seconds. At this point, sometimes I can't even restart the
machine without removing the battery and the external power for a few
seconds.
I am unable to get an X log. If I boot into "recovery mode" and then
select "failsafeX" it locks up in the same way. When I reboot into
recovery mode again and check /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it has not changed
(it's still from the time I booted with a working 3.5.0-32 kernel)
I tried my previous Thinkpad workarounds of
i915.modeset=0
intelfb.blacklist=1
but these don't fix the problem (however with i915.modeset=0 the machine does continue to boot, and I can get into it using ssh)
