The same problem appears after the last update of 12.04 on my Lenovo
IdeaPad S205:

It worked fine, but after the update the slider pops up, and the real
brightness does not change.

  Using either the increase or decrease brightness key results in osd-
  message showing the slider value going up or down. However, the actual
  brightness of the screen stays the same.
