[Bug 1214852] Re: encrypted drive can't boot

I'd like to perform a bisect to figure out what commit caused this
regression. We need to identify the earliest kernel where the issue
started happening as well as the latest kernel that did not have this
issue.

Can you test the following kernels and post back? We are looking for the
first kernel version that exhibits this bug:

v3.8.13: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13-raring/
v3.8.13.1: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13.1-raring/
v3.8.13.2: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13.2-raring/
v3.8.13.3: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13.3-raring/
v3.8.13.4: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13.4-raring/
v3.8.13.5: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8.13.5-raring/

You don't have to test every kernel, just up until the kernel that first
has this bug.

Thanks in advance!

Title:
  encrypted drive can't boot

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  - install new Ubuntu (or Xubuntu) 13.04 from CD in VM on external hard drive mounted as /dev/sda , having selected the option to encrypt the drive.
  - reboot when install is finished, then running on a physical machine with the external hard drive mounted as /dev/sdb (this setup has worked for months before today)
  - enter the encryption passphrase when asked (early in the boot process)
  - login as the one user set up during installation
  - install the ca. 109 MB of updates, including linux-image-3.8.0-29
  - reboot when the update process has finished
  - the graphic boot screen shows up and the waiting wheel starts turning, as usual, before the disk encryption passphrase is being asked for

Observed behaviour: after ca. 3-5 minutes, with the wheel turning and
no passphrase prompt, the system falls into a BusyBox (mini shell)
  with initramfs prompt.

Expected behaviour: after max. 1-2 minutes, the prompt to enter the
  disk encryption passphrase should appear.

Workaround: while still in grub, enter the advanced options and boot
kernel version 3.8.0-19, which shows expected behaviour.

The bug seems to appear with kernel version 3.8.0-29; kernel version
  3.8.0-19 works.

Both vanilla Ubuntu 13.04 and Xubuntu 13.04 are affected. The
workaround works for both Ubuntu variants.
