[Bug 1215441] Re: Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset
The folder 3.2.50-precise did not contain a i386 image, only amd64.
Still, it's older that the kernel I'm having trouble with.
Through synaptic, I downloaded some other kernels to test. Here is the
result, NOT using the nomodeset parameter:
3.2.0-51: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-49: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-48: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-45: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-44: works normally!
3.5.0-39: black screen with cursor but nothing else
3.8.0-29: black at first but when moving cursor a damaged desktop appears partly, with letters and areas missing
I would assume the problem occurs in some changes applied in 3.2.0-45?
Sadly, I'm handing back this computer to its rightful owner tomorrow, so
I won't be able to continue testing. Hopefully someone else has the same
problem and can make use of these notes.

Title:
Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Booting with kernel 3.2.0-29 works normally. After upgrading to
3.2.0-52 the screen started shaking erratically and it was very hard
to make out anything on it. Adding the "nomodeset" parameter to boot
work as a workaround but also seems to make X.org use the vesa driver
instead of intel -> slower desktop.
