[Bug 1008266] Re: X freezes several times a day

Ben Thornton, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

** Description changed:

  Ever since I installed Ubuntu 12.04 x86-64, I've experienced several X
crashes/freezes each day. Sometimes it happens when I play a Flash
video on the web, or when I play a local video file. Sometimes it
happens when I have multiple Firefox windows open, and I click on the
dock icon to reveal both windows.

Sadly, although the bug triggers frequently, I've had difficulty
reproducing it consistently. I'll play a video and X will crash, yet
after restarting X or rebooting the machine, the same video plays fine.

When the bug occurs, the screen freezes with the exception of the mouse
cursor. I can SSH into the machine. Killing the X process *usually*
works just fine: the desktop environment starts right back up and I can
continue using the machine until the next freeze. However, the last
time I tried this the desktop environment never restarted, and I
  rebooted the machine.

My current uptime is 18 hours, but most of that time the machine was
sitting there idle. If history is any indication, I can expect a crash
by the end of the day.

Anecdotally, the freeze seems more likely when I have several
applications open (Firefox with several tabs, some of which may contain
Flash video; the Terminal; my Downloads directory in a file manager
window; and perhaps VLC). Freezes seem more likely when using Compiz
effects like when I switch applications.

Please excuse me for not using Ubuntu-specific terminology. I use
several different OSes on any given day and it's hard for me to keep
track of the names of every application, subsystem, etc.

I don't normally maintain distribution code, so please let me know what else I can do to help fix this bug.
