Title:
System becomes irresponsive at random
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Since a couple of weeks my system freezes at random on a daily basis.
Usually I just have only a couple of freezes per year. So far I could
not identify which package takes the shame and hope that someone else
can read something useful out of the attached log files.
All freezes are similar:
The load average explodes up to values of 10 and higher, although the CPU load remains low.
The most memory consuming processes are killed one after the other, although there are still 3-4GB out of 8GB available.
A high disk activity starts, although no specific process seems to write a lot. I guess it's the kernel trying to flush dirty pages to increase the amount of available memory.
It is possible to switch to the vt, but usually the log in times out due to the high system load and it is impossible to issue a command. So it is strictly speaking not a freeze, but the system does not recover from that state.
At this point I also want to point out that the default disabling of
Alt-backspace, Alt-Fx, sysrq and ulimit in Ubuntu do not come in handy
in such situations ...
