I have the same issue:
I just updated the bios to the most recent one:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

But it did not fix the problem, SD cards are not detected and there is
no error message.

Bug description:
  Hello,

  the title sums it up quite well : I cannot use the SD card slot of my
  Dell E6420, nothing happens when a card is inserted.

  I tried loading the sdhci kernel module at startup and booting with
  the card inserted, to no avail.

  I am suprised of this because this hardware is present in the
  certified hardware list :
