NTFS on Linux is slower than on Windows. To rule a hardware or usb
problem format the usb stick with ext4 and test again.

  Writing to a 16GB USB 2.0 stick (NTFS) goes at ~17MB/s while under
  Windows (same amount, machine, stick, everything) goes at 30+MB/s.
