[Bug 1427431] Re: WiFi issues on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbo 2nd Gen with Intel AC 7260 (rev 83 / 0x144), high “mac retries” and Tx excessive retries:1765 Invalid misc:842.

I've noticed that http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware
/linux-firmware.git/tree/ has a iwlwifi-7260-10.ucode &
iwlwifi-7260-12.ucode which my (stock Ubuntu 14.04.2) didn't have in
/lib/firmware, so I grabbed those, but (after sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi
; sudo modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 bt_coex_active=0; sudo killall
wpa_supplicant) a 'dmesg | grep iwlwifi | grep firmware' still shows
"firmware version 25.228.9.0 op_mode iwlmvm" - one probably needs a
newer Kernel than 3.16 for those? (How/where can one see this?)

Also https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi says that
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/iwlwifi/iwlwifi-fixes.git
has "fixes for the current kernel release cycle" - do you know where in
that repo? Or is that not really maintained, perhaps? Or does / can one
"build" (?) the *.ucode from source, for a given Kernel 8say 3.16),
somehow?

Bug description:
Aloha Ubuntu, I’m seeing serious WiFi issues on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1
Carbo 2nd Gen with Intel AC 7260 (rev 83 / 0x144), with latest BIOS
upgrade. It seems to depend on WiFi router, its happens less
frequently in office, and is worst and quite easily reproducible in a
certain spot at home furthest (10m!) away from WiFi router, but
clearly indendant of only one WiFi router (they are completely
different in office vs. home). I’m, intentionally NOT connecting to a
“5 Ghz Network” (does that mean 802.11n??), as my home WiFi router has
  two separate SSIDs.

Normal web surfing in general and downloads in particular will go
sour. wavemon will show high “mac retries” (as in >1000, within
minutes) and iwconfig wlan0 will show growing “Tx excessive retries”
(say 1765) and “Invalid misc” (842). NOTE this is a little different
from the “missed beacons” seen in other reports (mine are 0! as shown
by both wavemon & iwconfig). Ping 8.8.8.8 shows like 20% or more
“packet loss”. I cannot see anything interesting (related) in e.g.
  /var/log/kern.log.

I’ve seen a number of other bug reports related to the 7260, incl.
  1354975, 1369101, 1397032 1382005, 1400022, 1403142, 1403142, 1405437,
  1417552, 1289961, 1421838, 1354975, 1371425, 1426259 but on reading
them gathered that you prefer individual reports per HW? Please
duplicate this should you believe this to be identical to one of
  those.

I’ve NOT changed any power saving stuff (I’d LIKE it to save power..).
Also NOT touched anything to do with regulatory region stuff (huh?). I
HAVE already done the “options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1” thing in
  /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi-disable11n.conf. Based on 1354975, I’ve today
also done sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-utopic to go from my
original 14.04 3.13 Kernel to the 3.16, and can see via dmesg | grep
iwlwifi that it's now "loaded firmware version 25.228.9.0 op_mode
iwlmvm" whereas previously it was "22.24.8.0".

PS: I’m relatively new to Ubuntu Bug reporting (but very familiar with
OSS in other contexts), and happy to try out suggestions, to learn and
if you are willing to guide. Happy to try 3.17 Kernel as per
KernelMainlineBuilds if useful (have never done..), or to.. recompile
git cherry-pick fixes and rebuild iwlwifi, if this is what it takes to
fix this - whatever it takes. If I can’t fix this, I think I’ll send
the ThinkPad X1 back to Lenovo - its pretty, but with WiFi semi
functional, useless to me. (I guess I could always use it as a very
expensive nice thin photo frame? ;)
