Re: [Bug 1445705] Re: package linux-image-3.13.0-49-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128
This bug where the kernel didn't install -- later on, (some time after a
reboot, etc), the software updater tried again and successfully installed
the kernel.
The Real Bug with that computer with respect to Ubuntu is that nouveau
video driver is *decidedly* unstable and not really particularly usable on
that computer. (I could go into detail if you wish). Then, when I install
the nvidia drivers, compiz quits working. (i.e. lightdm greeter screen
works fine, but after logging in, no icons and *no way to create any window
at all*. I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 -- that works, but the trick of setting
DISPLAY=:0 and starting a program over in the graphical session did not
work for me.)
What did work though was installing gnome-panel, then at the lightdm screen
choosing GNOME (Metacity) desktop environment. That doesn't give me Unity,
but it does give me a working GUI with icons and the ability to run
gnome-terminal.
It's an old machine and I just want to put Kodi on it and mess around and
learn all I can about perfecting a good Kodi setup.
So... that workaround is good enough.

Title:
package linux-image-3.13.0-49-generic (not installed) failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error
exit status 128
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Not sure how much of this is included automatically. This is an old
laptop. This is a new install of Ubuntu 14.04. A little bit ago, while
attempting to install a lot of updates through the GUI, after I had
locked the screen, the laptop seemed to go unresponsive. I switched
over to a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1). At first there was a
message saying the GPU had crashed or locked or something and that it
was switched to a frame buffer.
There's definitely some sort of issue with the graphics card: when I
press Alt+Tab, the small window previews appear garbled.
Anyway, here's /proc/cpuinfo:
