I have the same on my Thinkpad W510 (Nvidia Quadro FX 880M) on Xubuntu
12.10, using the xorg-edgers PPA, which brings in Linux 3.7.0.7-generic.
I installed nvidia-325 via synaptic. I get this in /var/log/syslog after
two crashes:

Sep  3 18:30:57 Escher kernel: [  990.669702] traps: nvidia-settings[3826] trap invalid opcode ip:7f7cc8123909 sp:7fff8db23558 error:0 in libpixbufloader-xpm.so[7f7cc811f000+6000]
Sep  3 18:36:18 Escher kernel: [ 1312.143971] traps: nvidia-settings[4682] trap invalid opcode ip:7ffdaae74909 sp:7fff775145b8 error:0 in libpixbufloader-xpm.so[7ffdaae70000+6000]

Does xpm suggest it's some sort of image or icon loading problem?

  nvidia-settings-325 crashes on Quit button press

Status in “nvidia-settings” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When im using nvidia-settings. When im change resolutions 1360x768 and
  apply and saved. Then im pressing exit button. Program crashed.

  my log say:

  Im using latest Nvidia drivers 325.15 drivers with NV Control 1.29.

  Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit.
