Title:
uvcvideo module randomly fails to load
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Status in “linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24” package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
I have a Dell Vostro 1400 with a built-in webcam that works flawlessly
with uvcvideo. However, during the boot I get
uvcvideo: Failed to query (129) UVC control 1 (unit 0) : -32
right after "loading hardware drivers...". Googling a bit, I found out
that this error message is harmless and can be ignored. And, in fact,
the camera completely works despite that. However, randomly the module
fails to load. In those cases, the message above is shown twice and
after the two lines I get "failed to initialize device". When that
happens, the camera does not work until I do a modprobe uvcvideo
manually (works fine after that).
This error seems random and I'm not sure how to reproduce. It seems a
race condition is happening during the module loading. This problem
was worse in Gutsy, where it happened more or less in one out of four
or five boots. Now in Hardy it happens VERY rarely, but still happens.
My workaround was blacklisting uvcvideo and adding it to /etc/modules.
This ensures the module is loaded during the "loading manual
drivers..." stage, which happens after "loading hardware drivers..."
has finished. That seemed to fix the problem.
