@Joseph - I haven't tested that yet as I do not have the older kernels
anymore but ...

... I can confirm that it worked few months ago fine before I upgraded
the kernel!

... and one more interesting fact about this bug: I cannot mount my USB device when it's plugged in before booting into Ubuntu. But it detects the stick fine when I mount it afterwards, when Ubuntu is booted.
Looks like no USB sticks can be detected during the boot process ...

Bug description:
  I cannot explain why my Ubuntu 15.04 setup is suddenly not capable of
  recognizing my USB 8GB stick. It worked yesterday, but not today.
  Didn't change anything except ran an apt-get upgrade.
