So it seems since reconfiguring the Access Point to use mode 'auto' and
channel 'auto' the poor performace has been cured?
The disconnect you report looks to be isolated:

Bug description:
My wireless adapter connecting to my Linsksys wrt120N (firmware
version 1.0.07) that constantly drops, only when running Ubuntu. Also
no matter which browser I use it will arbitrarily max out the CPU
usage and lock me up at times.
