[Bug 1493997] Re: Resolution max at 640x440

BJB, as there is a de-emphasis of support for i386 upstream, could you
please test x64 via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and
advise to the results?

Title:
  Resolution max at 640x440

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It is a follow up of bug 874694 (see it for history).

On the i845 and derivated chipset enabled laptop the max resolution on
the LVDS panel will be stuck to 640x480 (and not higher resolution as
supported by both the chipset and the LVDS panel)

In latest Ubuntu the "workaround" i915.modeset=0 that previously
provide some alternative is no more working. This bug is clearly
blocking usage on older machine using those chipset.

Only known workaround left is to use an external monitor on the VGA
port at the same time to get higher resolution on both output (mirror
  mode).

There maybe some issue at initialization time around computation for
max resolution due to the fact it has : LVDS, VGA, S-VIDEO ...
