I'm not willing to install an upstream kernel just yet.
I will keep an eye on the system over the next 48 hours before trying
that, as apt-get update, remove and upgrade of some older kernels and
packages seems to have calmed the issue over the last 18 hours.
I'm still running 3.19.0-30-generic though for now.

Had to perform a hard reset to reboot, no SSH access, no response to
pings. Nothing in syslog during freeze.
