[Bug 1359689] Re: cryptsetup password prompt not shown
I'm currently having the same issue with my system :/ I went through all
the mentioned workarounds in this thread but unfortunately none of them
have worked. I used the configs listed below via "sudo vim
/etc/default/grub". Used "sudo update-grub" once the grub configuration
was saved and restarted the machine. Ubuntu would always boot into a
blank/black screen at which point I have to insert my password blindly.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or workarounds that I can try?
Configs used:
* GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1080
* GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=wxh
* GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="text"
* GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
* GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080
* GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
* GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash"
* GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
* GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
System:
* Linux x 3.19.0-31-generic #36~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 10:21:08 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Bug description:
Currently in utopic the following happens when booting an encrypted
setup:
Press enter in grub, after a while screen freezes (or turns completely
black) and stays like that. When I press the down key, I can see the
password prompt. When I press the up key again, I get to the graphical
password prompt.
This is demonstrated in the following screencast:

Maybe this is related to the version of plymouth utopic currently uses, a similar debian bug report seems to be resolved with a newer version 0.9.0-6, see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=752752.
