[Bug 1513650] Re: Kernel stalls on boot if the nouveau module isn't blacklisted
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.3 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.
If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".
Thanks in advance.

Title:
Kernel stalls on boot if the nouveau module isn't blacklisted
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
I bought a ASUS N550JK laptop and that uses Hybrid Graphics (Intel + Nvidia).
As you boot the installation iso everything is fine until you reboot the first time.
When you what for the splash to finish loading the kernel to give you X and the login session it just seems to continue working, but nothing happens for a long time. This is caused by a bug in the nouveau driver when it's loaded by the kernel.
I found a temporary solution to that issue which is to manually edit
the kernel boot command line and delete splash quiet and then instead
add this instead:
modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
If you then press F10 to boot the kernel the problem disappears.
I have the same problem with the same computer if I install Mageia 5
on it so I can't see any other cause than the nouveau driver.
I have seen the kernel telling me with alot of lines that there's a
bug in nouveau.
Description: Ubuntu 15.10
Release: 15.10
linux-image-4.2.0-17-generic
I expected that you'd at least always be able to get X working when
you install Ubuntu completely fresh.
Instead I had to change the kernel boot command line everytime.
