  Detailed description:
  1)  Download http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/14.04.3/release/ubuntu-14.04.3-server-ppc64el.iso
  (dated Aug 5, 2015)
  2)  loop mount the iso image
  3)  copy the install/initrd.gz to a directory on your harddisk
  4)  fulliso]$ gunzip initrd.gz 
  5) fulliso]$ cpio -id < initrd 
  cpio: dev/console: Cannot mknod: Operation not permitted
  cpio: dev/null: Cannot mknod: Operation not permitted
  cpio: initrd not created: newer or same age version exists
  56679 blocks
  6) fulliso]$ cd lib/modules/3.19.0-25-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/
  7) ethernet]$ ls
  mellanox
  ethernet]$ 

  Note many ethernet drivers are missing from the initrd.gz

  In contrast, the mini.iso dated Nov 4, 2015, at
  http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/trusty-updates/main
  /installer-ppc64el/current/images/vivid-netboot/   has many ethernet
  drivers in it's initrd.gz
