I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10 about a month ago and haven't experienced the mentioned behavior with swap disabled since then.
Haven't tried with swap enabled though.

It is very likely that this bug has been fixed.

  kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

Bug description:
  I experience that my desktop (Ubuntu 15.04) gets unresponsive maybe once a week.
  When this happens the whole machine gets unresponsive immediately and only restarting helps.
  It only turns out from the atop logs what happened after the machine was restarted. Atop is configured to run every 30 secs.
  It is visible from the atop logs that kswapd0 is eating up all the CPU resources.
  Strange thing is that this happens despite there is no swap enabled.

  This happens mostly when Virtualbox is running and only a few amount
  of memory is available.
