Just did some testing this morning.

Although web cam works after BIOS upgrade, it is loosing picture once
you try to close a lid.

You don't even have to even close laptop lid, just slightly move it up
or down. cheese gives error message "could not read data"

I could have thought this is hardware problem, but other people reported
similar issue. Also if I reboot laptop (suspend also helps, but only
sometimes) while web cam is multifunctional web cam comes back to life
again.

web cam works after suspend, but only if you have suspended laptop
thought ubuntu "suspend button" without moving lid.

very strange, newer seen something like it before.

I can install windows to confirm that this is software and not hardware
related. Any more diagnostic we could do from Linux?

  I have tried latest kernel 3.11.0-999.201309110406

  Also Ubuntu 13.04 and Fedora 19 but web cam is not recognized at all.

  Tried with Cheese and also in Skype. Looks like more people have
  reported this issue.
