Info from 14.04 LTS same hardware, same network, just different partition:
Network prints fine.  Quick.  No authentication problems etc.

Would that kernel install and on work on xenial?  I'm currently at:
vmlinuz-4.4.0-040400-generic

Network pc printer is off at the moment and did get a proper response from xenial, 
processing pending   1/0

  xenial can't access network printer 14.04.3 no problem

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-not-
  possible'.

  14.04.3 on another partition accesses network printer on XP just fine.

  With identical smb.conf xenial cannot access the printer.

  Xenial can access XP jpg images etc. so network connection to XP
  working fine.
