[Bug 802902] Re: Realtek rtl8187b wireless chipset slow speed

Christopher M. Penalver,
i would like to ask you, how to call or address problem (if you take a look at comment 28 and this comment below)?

* Power consumption for wg111v3 with current linux driver rtl8187 is
inefficient ?

* Need more inefficient power consumption for device wg111v3 ?

* TX Power problem or wrong voltage? (of course it's just fun to think
about this: and how to verify it ? :D ..... )

* And usb cable ...... uninterference algorith is wrong or driver
(kernel, OS) lacks of it at all?

* Or usb power control in OS is wrong ?

So how to look at situation, which direction to go?

All i can say, that this problem ( chip rtl8187b overheating ) can lead to :

* connection degrades after few minutes or after 30 min
  (all depends how device is dissipating heat at it depends on each situation and moment differently
   and additional cooling really solves problem)

* OS can reports it's "Excellently" connected - but in reality it can't
move a byte;

* or connection rate and stability can vary from time to time .

I like this comment from:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/347032-28-enabling-power-adjustment-rtl8187-chipset

Although it has the same chipset, it's the adapter manufacturer who
decides which chipset features are actually available to the end user.
In any event, leaving TX Power at the default is always the recommended
action since increasing it can have negative effects such as:

* overheating of the power amplifier chip and the card which will cause
lower efficiency and more data errors;

* overdriving the amplifier which will cause more data errors;

* excessive power usage for the card and this may overload the 3.3V
power supply of the board that the card is located on resulting in
voltage drop and reboot or excessive temperatures for the board.

* Life-expectancy of the adapter is greatly reduced.

Title:
  Realtek rtl8187b wireless chipset slow speed

Status in The Linux Kernel:
  Invalid
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hi, I have ubuntu 11.04, all updates, wifi chipset rtl8187B, kernel 2.6.38-10, and 14mbit/s internet connection.
  When I try to download something, for example from torrents, I see ping up (up to 500-800ms), slow speed (<1mbit/s) and packets lost.
  In windows its works fine, ping didnt up, download speed 14mbit/s.
  So if I want to download something, I need to reboot from ubuntu to windows, or wait for download at low speed in ubuntu. And it's not good=(
  Thanks, and sorry my bad english.
