Title:
Ubuntu turns display off while booting on Lenovo y580

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hi, I purchased y580 in the following configuration recently (sorry
for Polish language, but I couldn't find the exact same configuration
  anywhere else):

  http://www.euro.com.pl/laptopy-i-netbooki/lenovo-ideapad-y580-i7-3630
  -4gb-1tb-gtx660-2gb-w8.bhtml#opis

and tried to boot Ubuntu 13.04 using live USB. The effect was (despite
trying with EFI boot and legacy option) the OS to turn off the display
  just after the GRUB screen.

I didn't give up and my next try was to check with Ubuntu 12.10 - and
the live USB booted. After installing 12.10 I proceeded to upgrade to
13.04 (the only thing I did inbetween was install all updates to the
default installation of 12.10) and after the upgrade, Ubuntu was once
again turning off the display after grub screen.

While investigating what's wrong, I tried to boot with 3.5 kernel that
was left from my 12.10 installation and it worked, so I guess this has
something to do with 3.8 kernel (maybe 3.8 tries to use my Nvidia
card, since 3.5 kernel does not use it at all?). Just to try if things
have not improved in 3.9 kernel, I installed it from the packages in
Ubuntu Saucy archives. The result was still turned off display.

So to sum up, I must currently use 13.04 with 3.5 kernel and if not
going through Ubuntu 12.10 upgrade, I would not be able to install
Ubuntu on my machine at all...
