A similar problem started occurring after an update/dist-upgrade about
the same time Jerry reported this on the Forum.  My problem continues
but is intermittent (every second or third boot will fail).  You can out
wait the blank screen because 90 seconds after you enter the login PW
and the screen blanks the desktop appears.  Would be happy to gather
what information you need but don't know how to install a prior kernel.

  Fresh install 19 March daily live "pending" same thing
  from command line did ubuntu-bug, saved file
  Booted xenial in another partition, this one a month old updated daily runs fine
  did ubuntu-bug on the /tmp/apport* from the failing ubuntu pDISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
