It only started after the upgrade. The last kernel I ran which worked perfectly fine was kernel 
3.13.0-83-generic:i386.  The bug seems to not be present with the 4.5 kernel, though I've only done minor testing.

  When the battery reaches some low point a kernel panic seems to occur
  where the screen goes black and the only signal from the machine is
  the blinking caps-lock key until the machine reboots on its own
  accord.
