I have had a similar issue, attempting to suspend results in the machine
freezing and requiring me to reboot it. I can't access anything but the
prtsc+alt+ctrl+u+s+b sequence allows me to restart the machine.

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 (AMD64) on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500. Everything is
pretty much stock standard and up to date, I have not used backports or
any other non stable or test packages.

Bug description:
  Closing the lid did not send the laptop to suspend. The next day  the
  laptop was unresponsive  (Even Cntrl+Alt+F2 did not work), had to do a
  hard shutdown.

  The first boot attempt resulted in several error messages and again
  the system to be unresponsive.

  The second boot attempt worked perfectly fine.
