Thank you for following up.

I have now installed and booted with 4.6-rc-wily, and the result is that
it freezes at the desktop password prompt.

It reaches the desktop password prompt with the cursor blinking in the
input field, but does not accept keystrokes. The wifi connects, popping
up a message. Soon after the password input field freezes. At no point
could I switch to a tty or type anything. The only functioning key is
the power button, which shows the pre-shutdown dialog to choose reboot,
shudown or sleep, but the mouse is not working either.

This is exactly the same situation as with kernel 4.4.0-21, as reported
