[Bug 1578621] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.4.0-21 freezes at the password prompt upon boot unless acpi=off

For the record, if GRUB is setup to boot in text mode (so that the
graphical desktop does not come up), the keyboard is not working either:
the system books all the way to a tty prompt, then, despite the cursor
blinking the whole time (never stops blinking, like it does after a few
seconds for the graphical password prompt), one cannot type in the
username.

Title:
Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.4.0-21 freezes at the password prompt upon
  boot unless acpi=off

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In this macbook pro 11,1, the kernel 4.4.0-21 was able to boot just
  fine.

But, it would took about 30 seconds before the boot sequence would
start, because the GRUB partition was not "blessed" (a particularity
of UEFI systems in apple hardware).

So I rebooted, held down command+alt+R, which boots from "internet recovery mode" into MacOSX (I don't have otherwise MacOSX installed), from the apple menu I opened a terminal and:
  1. Listed the partitions with "diskutil list" to find out which partition has GRUB.
  2. Run the blessing command: "bless --device /dev/disk1s1 --setBoot --legacy --verbose".

(While there, I took the opportunity to silence the startup chime
  sound with "nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00".)

Upon reboot, there is no more delay (hurray!) but now the 4.4.0-21
kernel would lead to a freeze upon reaching the desktop password
prompt. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive.

To address this, I forced shutdown by holding down the power key for 5
seconds, then rebooted holding down the "ESC" key to enter the GRUB
menu, and added "acpi=off" to the kernel parameters.

  The result: booted just fine.

The freeze is reproducible. Happened a number of times until I
understood that acpi was the issue.

Running without a battery charge indicator or a broken wifi is not
ideal. Is there any workaround to this issue?
