The issue even started happening on the mainline kernel?  If so, maybe try the latest mainline kernel:

  kernel panic connecting display port to Dell Latitude E7470

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Connecting an external Display Port screen wither via the dell E-Port
  plus or directly via the miniDP causes a kernel panic. The crash is
  not always immediate, if the internal screen is disabled when docked,
  then the external screen may work, though undocking and docking a
  second time usually crashes it.

  Kernels crashing for me are 4.4.0-21-generic and 4.4.0-22-generic.

  Testing with the mainline kernel linux-
  image-4.4.12-040412-generic=4.4.12-040412.201606011712 has not yet
  caused the panic
