Just now I am running under

Linux big 4.7.0-040700rc2-generic #201606051831 SMP Sun Jun 5 22:33:44
UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The results are the same - all other buttons (1,3,4,5,8,9) work, the
middle button works never.

  The issue looks exactly like #1581088 but I've been asked to file a
  separate report.

  xev registers buttons 1(left),3(right), 4,5 (scroll wheel), 8,9 (back,
  forward), but NOT 2
