Title:
Hibernation fails irreversibly ("not enough swap space")
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Most of the times (but not always) when I hibernate, the error message
appears: "MP: not enough swap space" and the hibernation hangs
forever. Or it seems to complete (meaning the power goes off) but then
when I turn on the computer it fresh boots instead of resuming.
If the swap space is really insufficient, and if this is really the
cause of the issue, there are at least a couple of bugs:
1. Hibernation should be atomic: either it can complete succesfully or
it should be reversed completely, or not be initiated at all. It must
be guaranteed that the system never ever finds itself in an
intermediate state where hibernation cannot complete but cannot be
reversed. All conditions that are needed to complete succesfully
should be checked before the hibernation is initiated. Checking
whether there is enough swap space is particularly easy, I guess.
2. I din't choose the amount of swap space when I installed ubuntu,
nor did I change it afterwards, nor did I ever increase the amount of
RAM after installation. The size of the swap partition is the one that
was proposed by the installer by default. The installer should propose
by default a swap partition size that is guaranteed to allow the
system to function properly, including hibernation. AND if the user
chooses a size for the swap partition that _may_ be insufficient a
warning should be issued before allowing the installation to begin.
