[Bug 1242946] Re: "Disks" utility systematically fails to format disk; no understandable reason is given
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.12 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.
If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.
If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".
Thanks in advance.

Title:
"Disks" utility systematically fails to format disk; no understandable
reason is given
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have no idea what package this is. This is the tool that is called
"Disks" in Ubuntu.
The screenshot shows the disk I'm trying to format. I click on the gear-like icon on the top right and select "format disk".
I get the error message that can be seen in the screenshot.
If there's a good reason why the disk cannot be formatted, then the
error message must be clearer and explain what the user likely has to
do in order to be able to format the disk. This error message is too
cryptic and gives zero information to any user other than the
developers who created this tool.
I've been able to format the disk by deleting all the partitions one
by one, then creating the partition I wanted. I would expect "format
disk" to be equivalent to that.
