Still a problem for an Aspire 5535 in both Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.10.

Running pm-suspend and pm-hibernate both cause the problem as well.

  The system seems to be running, but responds to nothing. Screen is
  blank, does not respond to keyboard input. (I tried using Alt-F1,
  logging in, and creating a file using touch. Nothing happened.)
